Teddy Bears' Picnic

Posted in Press Release

We’re delighted to announce that the annual Hertford Castle Teddy Bears’ Picnic will take place on Sunday 23rd July from 12 noon to 4 pm. Visit the Castle and its stunning grounds free of charge for an afternoon of child-friendly entertainment and fun activities organised by Hertford Town Council.

This year’s official event poster features artwork by HArts Fest Children’s Art Competition winner, Izzy Clowes, aged 12, which took place in April 2023 and who was chosen at that time by the previous Mayor of Hertford, Sue Barber.

Welwyn Garden City Brass Band will be playing throughout the afternoon on the main lawn, including the traditional Teddy Bears’ Picnic song whilst the annual Teddy Bear Parade takes place at 3 p.m. Children are encouraged to bring along their favourite teddy bear and dress them up to take part in the ‘Best Dressed Teddy’ competition after the Teddy Bear Parade, where prizes will be awarded by the Mayor of Hertford, Cllr Vicky Smith.

Children can also participate in a free teddy bear hunt around the Castle to get a sweet treat. Hertford Castle will also be open (between midday and 4:00 p.m.) to the public free of charge, and visitors are invited to explore the themed Castle basement rooms. The Hertford Canoe Club will be running water activities on the River Lea free of charge including canoeing and kayaking. The Chair of Hertford Town Council’s Development and Leisure Committee, Cllr Ann Woodward, said:“I hope many of our younger residents and their teddy bears will come and join us for this lovely annual event in the beautiful grounds of Hertford Castle. Everyone is welcome, so do bring a picnic and enjoy all the exciting activities on offer".

This event is part of Hertford Town Council’s long tradition of providing events in the Castle Grounds. The full programme can be found at https://www.hertford.gov.uk/events-listings/.
