Hertford Town Council Precept - 2025/2026

Posted in Press Release

At a meeting of Full Council on 20th January 2025, Hertford Town Council set its precept for the 2025/2026 financial year.

The 2025/2026 precept for a Band D household has been set as £125.46. This is an increase of 5% from the previous year. The Council were unanimous in their decision to keep the increase as low as possible.

Councillor Steven Watson, Chair of the Finance, Policy and Administration Committee commented: “The Town Council relies on the precept (or Council Tax) for around three quarters of its income each year. This increase, equivalent to about 50p per month for a Band D property, covers increasing costs such as the rise in National Insurance and allows the Council to continue to serve the people of Hertford and the village of Hertingfordbury, by providing essential services through sound financial management.

Hertford Town Council services include: six allotments sites, the cemetery and closed churchyards, the Pinehurst Play Area, taxi marshals, maintenance of the war memorial, planters and CCTV in the town centre, as well as allocating grants to local community groups and charities and offering a wide programme of free community events.

As well as running the Town and Tourist Information Centre, the Council is delighted to be the lead funder of the excellent Hertford Museum. The Council facilitates the Castle Plus Neighbourhood Planning process and is a lead partner on the Hertford Castle Greenspace Renewal project. The Council also has activities and improvements planned through the three strategies it’s currently developing on Environmental Sustainability, Sustainable Tourism and Communications, Engagement and Marketing.

The Council works in partnership with its residents, local groups and businesses to help our vibrant and diverse community to thrive. We work to enhance and protect Hertford’s green spaces, its waterways and its landmarks, and strive to promote and preserve our unique history and heritage. Hertford Town Council continues to support and invest in Hertford, for both today and tomorrow.”
