In collaboration with the Secret Society of Hertford Crafters, Hertford Town Council organises three themed children’s trails across the year for families to enjoy FREE of charge. Popular with local residents and visitors, participants are invited to follow the trail map and discover the themed knitted characters hiding in shops and shop windows across Hertford town centre.
The trails coincide with the school holidays, providing families with a FREE activity to entertain children during the break, which promotes exploration and enjoying the outdoors. The first themed trail ‘British Greats – Past and Present’ will take place over Easter, from Saturday 5th April to Saturday 26th April. The themes of the remaining trails are still to be confirmed but will take place as follows:
- Hertford town centre Summer Trail: Saturday 19th July – Saturday 30th August
- Hertford town centre Christmas Trail: Saturday 20th December – Saturday 3rd January 2026
The themed knitted characters are handmade by the Secret Society of Hertford Crafters, which are then auctioned at the end of the trail to fund charities and future projects. Details of the auction will be available on the trail leaflets.
To take part, families can collect a trail leaflet from the Hertford Town and Tourist Information Centre or download via the Hertford Town Council website: www.hertford.gov.uk/events-listings.
For a chance to win a gift voucher, participants are invited to return their completed trail leaflets to the Hertford Town and Tourist Information Centre to enter the prize draw.
Chair of Hertford Town Council’s Development and Leisure Committee, Councillor Ann Woodward, commented: “Hertford Town Council is delighted to offer our popular Children’s Trails as a fun, free activity for the school holidays. We are proud to partner with the infamous Secret Society of Hertford Crafters to bring joy to the town and to the many children and their families who take part.”
The Secret Society of Hertford Crafters said: “Our members are always so keen and excited to make items for the Town Trails. Each project brings a different, and hopefully educational, theme. Many of our members, will for the first time, be making a character that they may never have imagined crafting, but each time they rise to the challenge and produce an entirely unique item. It is so pleasing to know that many children and their families enjoy taking the trail and some love the characters enough to bid for them in our auctions.”
