Castle Open Days

As part of our amazing events programme for 2025, Hertford Castle is open for the public to explore for FREE on dedicated event days.

The magnificent Grade I listed building dates from the mid-15th century. It is situated in beautiful grounds, nestled at the heart of Hertford, and was a Royal Palace for over 300 years where Queen Elizabeth I spent much of her childhood. Bioblitz – Sunday 23rd March

Cars at the Castle – Sunday 1st June

An evening with the Friends of Hertford Castle

Our Castle Open Days would not be possible without the support of the ‘Friends of Hertford Castle’; an invaluable group of knowledgeable volunteers. Join us on Wednesday 19th March 2025, from 6.00pm - 8.30pm at Hertford Castle, to discover how you can get involved and become a ‘Friend of Herford Castle’.

The event will include light refreshments and the opportunity to meet our existing friends, and is perfect for history enthusiasts or people looking for local rewarding volunteering opportunities.  To sign up please do go to:  www.hertford.gov.uk/events-listings/friends-of-hertford-castle-evening

Councillor Ann Woodward, Chair of the Development and Leisure Committee commented: “We are so fortunate to have such a beautiful historic building at the heart of our community and we look forward to welcoming residents and visitors into the Castle to share in its unique history and heritage. We are so very grateful to the Friends of Hertford Castle for regularly displaying their considerable expertise in such an engaging way and we hope that new friends, of all ages, will join our valued team.”
