NEW COMMUNITY ART PROJECT, OPPORTUNITY FOR LOCAL ARTISTS

Budget:

Hertford Town Council wishes to fund a new community art project and will support financially to a maximum of £5,000.

Location:

The artwork(s) will be hung in Evron Place on the side wall of the Post Office off Maidenhead Street in Hertford Town Centre.

Theme:

Evron Place currently has a mural celebrating Hertford and its twin towns, the Friends of Evron and the Friends of Wildeshausen. The mural represents a cultural exchange between England, Germany and France. The theme of friendship and our twin towns should form the basis for your design submission. This mural will be removed ahead of installation of the new artwork.

Timetable:

Designs need to be submitted to Hertford Town Council by midday on the 28th March 2025 and include sketches of the proposed artwork, details of materials used and a brief description of how you, the artist, will involve the community within the delivery of the artwork. Submissions can be via email to steve.catherall@hertford.gov.uk or via post/hand delivered to Steve Catherall, Hertford Town Council, The Castle, Hertford SG14 1HR

The Brief:

  • The project aims to create an engaging public artwork that reflects the theme of Hertford and the friendship between the twinned towns. The creation of the artwork must foster local participation, either through participation in production or participation in idea generation.
  • The artwork could be a mosaic or a mural.
  • The artist will be responsible for supplying all on-site materials and equipment for this project. The council may be able to assist with a venue for participatory workshops.
  • The proposed site of the installation will require an artwork of at least 3 – 4 square metres to be impactful. This can be a single piece or a collection of smaller pieces. Artists are encouraged to view the space before submitting their design ideas and costings.

Submission requirements:

The proposal must include detailed budgets, method statements (if known at this time), a summary of how the community will be able to be involved, materials, installation options, public liability, and a timeline that aligns with council-defined timescales. The Council would like to announce the winning design as part of the VE Day celebrations in May 2025 and install the artwork within 6 months of the announcement.
